Candle Care in Indian Climate: Humidity, Heat & Storage
Most candle care advice is written for climates that never see a 40°C afternoon or a monsoon that pushes indoor humidity past 80%. India's weather does both, for months at a time, and it changes how candles behave — from the moment they leave the workshop to the last inch of wax in the jar.
Heat is the first problem, and it starts before you even light the candle. Soy and other natural waxes soften well below body temperature, and a parcel left in a hot delivery van or on a sunny windowsill can develop a dull, uneven top or a slight "sweat" of oil on the surface. This isn't spoilage — it's just the wax responding to heat — but it's easy to mistake for a manufacturing fault if you don't know to expect it. The fix is simple: store candles in the coolest, darkest spot available, ideally below 25°C, and never on a windowsill or near a kitchen appliance that radiates heat.
Humidity causes a quieter kind of damage. Cotton wicks are slightly absorbent, and in a genuinely humid room they can pull in a small amount of moisture between uses. A damp wick lights more reluctantly, burns with a weaker flame, and is more likely to tunnel — burning a narrow well straight down the middle instead of melting the wax evenly to the edges of the jar. If your candle seems harder to light during the monsoon than it did in winter, humidity is almost always why.
The single most useful habit for any candle, in any climate, is the first burn. Wax has a "memory" — the melt pool from the first time you light it tends to set the pattern for every burn after. In a hot, humid room the wax is already softer than usual, so it's tempting to blow a candle out the moment it looks lit. Resist that. Let the first burn run until the melt pool reaches all the way to the edges of the container, which usually takes one to two hours depending on the size of the candle. Skipping this step is the single biggest cause of tunneling, and tunneling wastes a real, noticeable amount of wax over the life of a candle.
Wick length matters more here than the packaging usually admits. Trim the wick to about a quarter of an inch (roughly 6mm) before every burn, using scissors or a wick trimmer rather than your fingers. A too-long wick burns hotter and faster, which is exactly the wrong direction in a warm room — it accelerates the melt pool, increases soot, and shortens the candle's overall life. This one habit, repeated every time, does more for how long a candle lasts than almost anything else on this list.
Where you place a burning candle matters too, especially with ceiling fans and open windows doing double duty as cooling in most Indian homes. A direct draft doesn't just risk an uneven burn — it pulls the flame sideways, which can scorch the inside of the jar and blacken the wick faster than normal. Burn candles away from fans, air-conditioner vents, and open windows, and keep them somewhere the flame stays upright and still.
Between burns, always use a snuffer or gently dip the wick into the melt pool and straighten it, rather than blowing the flame out. Blowing sends a fine mist of hot wax onto the inside of the jar, which builds up over time as a cloudy film and, in humid air, can trap moisture against the glass. It's a small habit that keeps both the jar and the wick cleaner burn after burn.
Finally, give some thought to where candles live when they're not being used. A cupboard or drawer away from direct sunlight is ideal — sunlight fades both the wax color and any dyed glass over time, and heat exposure compounds everything above. If you've bought festival candles or candles for an event weeks in advance, this is the difference between them arriving in the same condition you chose them in, and arriving softened, faded, or scented differently than expected.
None of this is complicated, but it is specific to conditions most candle guides don't account for. Treat heat and humidity as real variables — not just backdrop — and a candle bought in April will burn just as evenly in September.
