Soy Wax vs Paraffin: What's Actually Better for Indian Summers
Most "soy wax vs paraffin" comparisons are written for climates where the biggest challenge is which one smells stronger. In an Indian summer, with rooms regularly crossing 35°C and air-conditioning far from guaranteed, heat tolerance matters just as much as scent throw — and it's the part most comparisons leave out entirely.
Start with the basic chemistry, because it explains everything downstream. Soy wax is a natural, hydrogenated vegetable wax with a relatively low melting point, typically somewhere in the 50-55°C range. Paraffin, a petroleum byproduct, usually melts higher, often 60-65°C depending on the blend. That gap of roughly ten degrees sounds small on paper, but it's the difference between a candle that softens slightly on a hot shelf and one that stays firm.
In practice, this means soy candles need a little more care in storage during peak summer — kept out of direct sun, away from windows, and not left in a closed car or a hot storage room. Paraffin candles are more forgiving of casual storage in heat, which is a real, practical advantage if you don't have reliable air-conditioned storage space.
Burn behavior tells a different part of the story, and here soy wax comes out ahead. Because it melts at a lower temperature, soy wax pools more slowly and burns cooler, which generally means a longer burn time from a candle of the same size — often 30-50% longer, depending on the specific blend and wick. In a country where a scented candle is as likely to be lit for a two-hour puja or a long evening on the balcony as for a quick five minutes, that longer, steadier burn adds up in real cost-per-use.
Soy wax also produces less visible soot than paraffin, because it burns at a lower, cleaner temperature. In smaller rooms, especially bedrooms and closed pujas rooms that don't get much cross-ventilation, that matters more than it might in a larger, airier home — less soot means less black residue on walls and glass over weeks of regular use.
Scent throw is where paraffin traditionally claims an edge, and it's not an unfair claim. Paraffin's higher melting point means fragrance oils vaporize more readily, which can give a stronger initial "throw" when a candle is first lit. Soy wax carries fragrance a little more gently, with a throw that's often described as smoother rather than weaker — noticeable in the room, but less overwhelming in a small, closed space. Whether that's an advantage depends entirely on the room and the person burning it.
There's also the question of what's actually in the wax, which matters more to some buyers than others. Soy wax is a renewable, plant-based product, typically biodegradable, and burns without the petroleum byproducts paraffin is derived from. None of this makes one wax objectively "better" — it makes them better suited to different priorities. If long burn time, cleaner air in a smaller room, and a plant-based ingredient list matter most, soy wax is the stronger choice for most of the year in most Indian homes.
